PLANNING: TREATMENT

CREATING IDEAS FOR COURSEWORK

My group and I looked at previous AS media students to see what conventions they had used to receive their high marks. This helped us with what we needed to do and the different steps we needed to take to come up with our finished product

Today we got into groups and started planning ideas for our coursework. We weren’t too interested in making a thriller opening as it had been done so many times in the past. We wanted to create something different that would challenge us and push boundaries.

·      We came up with the genre of comedy that would be based on a restaurant/cookery film.
·      The comedy would come from the different costumers that dine at our restaurant.

We decided that our treatment narrative needed a focus that would tie it really clearly to our target audience. We are making our narrative from the point of view of a 18 year old girl on her hap year. This allows our video to have a main story plot focussing around the new girl, serving as a waitress, on her gap year. We are going to have an over voice playing over the clip that allows us to understand the point of view of view of the waitress.

Characters:

Waitress: Gap year student who tells the story
Main Chef:  Heston Blumenthal inspired chef(a perfectionist)
Customers: Biker Boys, Two celebrity twins, Two stuck up old people and a fat girl with her mum
Location: Local restaurant

Treatment:

·      Australian Gap year student who is working as a waitress in what we are portraying as a quirky local restaurant
·      To emphasise this individuals we use customers that are very much dissimilar from one another to create tension and comedy
·      The celebrity characters are portrayed as stupid and materialistic
·      In contrast we have costumers such as the “Biker Boys” portrayed as being the “rough” guys with their leather jackets and boots
·      Posh couple are sitting opposite the celebrity’s to show contrast creating comedy
·      The chef is portrayed as the inspired chef Heston Blumenthal with the scientific qualities and characteristics he possess.
·      We get a mid shot of him working in the kitchen with his lab coat on, preparing food – presented as a sharp man, coming up with the most intreging menu plans
·      To emphasize this experimental/scientific quality of Heston Blumenthal our mise-en-scene and props consist of test tubes and lab coats.
